You asked for it...and it is almost ready! MKMC has been busy working on a "hop up" package for the Subaru endurance motors. The package consists of a larger carburetor and exhaust header along with the necessary accessories, such as intake manifolds, air filters and mufflers. Testing, so far, has resulted in a noticeable power increase and has shaved more than 5 seconds off lap times, I ran a 1:12.7 yesterday on tires that have 3 races (over 600 miles) on them. We are looking at a few minor tweaks (such as gear ratio changes) and expect to have a package ready in time for all teams prior to the upcoming endurance season. I believe that 1 minute-10 second laps are in the very near future. Stop by the track and take a look at what we have been working on, the package looks and sounds pretty good. "Killer Bee" Ken, "Bee" seeing you soon!

Based on my calculations, the modified Step 1 kart is hitting just over 56 mph going into turn 6 (clockwise). I know that one team has consistently beaten my lap times by a full second, so, after a little more tuning and a lighter driver, speeds of 60 mph are probable, not bad for a 7 hp motor. Higher straight-a-way speed results in karts entering turns at higher speeds. The additional turn in speed will require the teams to start experimenting with chassis set-up, something that was not as critical with the stock engines. All of the development, so far, has been carried out without making chassis or gearing adjustments so that the engine mods could be evaluated on their own merit. A valuable tool has been the installation of an electronic engine monitoring device, we used a Mychron but an Alfano would have served the same purpose. If your team is considering the modification package for your kart, I would strongly recommend adding one of these devices so that you can monitor your engine's RPMs, cylinder head temps, and your lap times. After using one, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. The engine mods allow you to tap deeper into the handling potential of the chassis/tire package and require the driver to "drive" the kart which sends the fun meter higher and higher (as if it were not high enough already). I wish we had 20 karts running the series. Can't wait for the 2010 endurance season to kick off! Maybe we will get to race in the rain. Any word on this next year's schedule? Ken

Ken, this sounds awesome! I'll be out to the track tomorrow to trade our championship kart for the new one. Maybe I can get a lap or two in the test kart?

The '09 championship winning kart is up for grabs. That's right, team Lucky Strike has taken possession of their new kart and has turned in the "old" one. This "old" kart won 3 of the 5 races and is credited with some of the fastest laps turned by any of the Step 1's. Better get this one before JC returns from Hawaii and decides to keep it. It's hard to beat a proven winner. The line forms here!

JC/Ken. When do we get the new parts, and when do we start racing?

Alan, I have given JC the parts list and he is determining how to offer the parts and what the final cost will be. He has been under the weather lately so please bear with us, there should be some news on this soon. Ken

You asked for it, and it is here! That's right, the hot rod "kits" for the Step 1 endurance karts are here and will be available at the track beginning this Thursday, Feb. 18. Each kit consists of an intake and exhaust package that really that wakes up the Subaru motor. The intake system includes a larger carburetor with velocity stack and air cleaner, a custom intake manifold, an accelerator linkage kit, nuts, bolts, gaskets, plus an air cleaner "sock" for rainy days. The exhaust system includes a "candy cane" shaped header with silencer, clamps, support brackets and insulation tape. The complete kit sells for $438 plus tax, installation is another $100. Call JC and make an appointment if you want your system installed by MKMC, or leave your kart at the track and we will fix you up as soon as we can. Have fun! Ken
