Karl has pointed out that most of us local Easykart racers have failed to keep up with the current rules, so for the July 10th event we have been put on notice to shape up or face a DQ. Sure, we have been up here doing our own thing and have ignored the many rule changes that have been implemented, so we are on very shaky ground when it comes to DQing a kart for "illegal stuff". I have reviewed current Easykart USA rules and have emailed a list of my questions/concerns to Karl, who will be reviewing the rules and assembling a rulebook or a list of deviations from the rulebook for use at local MKMC events (I hope). From what I understand, Easykart USA is in the process of rewriting the rulebook for use beginning in 2011. This will be a good time for all of the Easykart community to become familiar with the current rules and discuss possible changes that you feel would benefit the series. You can find the current Easykart rules at: www.easykart-usa.com/docs/2010_Easykart_Sporting_Tech_Regulations.pdfGood luck, see everyone on July 10th.

Ken & Karl, when you say "most", it calls everyone into question. We passed tech with no concerns. We prepared for racing & tech in Ocala thanks to you both. I can't thank you guys enough.;D Will you let us know the trend of the local problems? The EK rulebook leaves some things open to interpretation. Is there more to know than the 2010 Easykart rulebook/engine manual? I know that I need to put a safety cable on my exhaust lol. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, In the past, MKMC towed the line when it came to Easykart rules. However, when the Vega tire became mandatory, MKMC continued using the previously specified tire, the MG FZ (actually I think any tire that you want to run has been acceptable). Other Easykart rule updates that took place during this period were accepted, such as no more engine seals or jet covers. So we sort of did our own thing up here, following the spirit of the rules but not the letter of the rules. As long as the folks racing under these rules were aware of the history and evolution of our rules things were ok. The problem comes when new racers who are are unaware of our rules buy a kart to race and since there are no written rules describing what can and can not be done to their karts, they wind up purchasing "illegal" components through no fault of their own. I think that we have arrived at a point in time where we need to state what is acceptable and what is not. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to adopt the current Easykart USA rules and document where deviations from these rules will be acceptable at Monticello. The revised Easykart USA rules applicable to 2011 will need to be reviewed when they are published and any deviations documented. There should be no need for anyone to panic, complying with the current Easykart USA rules should not require major modifications or expensive purchases (unless you are really illegal). For most of us compliance will require a safety cable on our exhaust, tightening our middle axle bearing and adding any missing axle bearing set screws. Everyone should read over the rules and ask questions if something seems unclear. You can use this forum to express your thoughts since Karl, JC, and anyone else involved with this task will be listening. Thanks, Ken

Ken,
I think that our club is a "spirit of the rules" club. That being said, I would hate to be DQ'ed because I didn't understand the Easykart rulebook.
We were not racing when EK changed the rules mid season. It would have been maddening for me if we had to change our setups then.
If it were up to me, I would let everyone slide for the rest of our club season (with the exception of the FKCS event). I would point out discrepancies in tech and make notes for future events. Document where karts were outside of the rules, but not DQ unless blatant cheating was uncovered.
Finally, I would hold all kart racers/mechanics responsible for understanding the 2011 EK rules. We can hold an event where everything is EK spec with understood exceptions (like tires).
Karl says "ask if you need help". He hasn't let me down yet. Neither have you, Ken.
Thanks,
Chuck

Karl and I spoke on the phone yesterday about the exceptions needed in order to continue racing the way we currently do at MKMC. I came up with a list of 5 or 6 major and 3 or 4 minor issues. Karl has asked me to put this list together for a first draft to get the ball rolling. Hopefully I can get this done in the next couple of days. Ken
